One Big Thing - Improving Productivity

Think about a time in your life when you worked in a team that was productive…

It may be a team at work, a sports team or maybe it was some volunteer work you did for a local charity.

I bet you and everyone on your team knew why you were there.

There was no ambiguity. Everyone was pulling in the same direction towards the same goal.

You had a clear purpose.

I also bet you had clear roles set out. You felt like everyone knew what they were supposed to do and it was clear to you what everyone else was supposed to do.

You could get on with your tasks knowing that everyone else was also clear on their tasks.

You also didn’t have arguments over who did what or whether someone was pulling their weight or not.

Someone was in charge and tasked with getting the team to hum like a well oiled machine.

Your team was well organised.

And, when you began your task you had the right tools for the job.

Because, you’re a great team right? So, a great team needs the best tools.

In a work environment this means replacing those laptops that die 10 mins after being unplugged.

It means investing in the latest data processing tools to ensure your team don’t spend hours doing avoidable tasks…

CTRL-C, CTRL-V, all day. Painful and soul destroying.

It means taking the best project management and productivity tools and embedding them in your team.

Don’t scrimp!

You had the right tools for the job.

But, the glue that held it all together was the human element of the team.

All the mechanical parts to the team mentioned above came together but…..

The glue that held them together was empathy.

You recognised your team were simply humans, wanting to do their best and create something amazing.

Three Actions To Take This Week

My vision for this newsletter is to provide you with weekly actions that you can take away and use in your life in the coming week. So, here are three things you could try this week:

  1. Take an hour for lunch and go for a walk.

  2. Pick a day and put your phone aside for a day…a whole day! Let me know what happens!

  3. Spend 30 mins visualising how you want your life to be in 5 years time.
